“Lex… you wanna take your break now or at 5?”

I stopped checking security tags to glance at the time and then Blue when I realized it was 10 to. “Can I take an hour today,” I asked sweetly, finishing up the last portion of the wall and noting where I’d left off.

“For?”

I pursed my lips. “Reparations. Your people just traumatized me,” I reminded him of the… incident… that occurred less than an hour ago and he sighed.

It was partly my fault but I swear today was not my day. I was certain I had a ‘try me’ sign written all over me because people were taking it and running with it.

“Do you know how many centuries of slavery my ancestors endured just for your people to come up in here… in 20 motherfucking 18 and say to me that–”

“Okay,” he called with a huff, not bothering to turn from the computer. He was setting the new kid up with an account of his own to do cash. “Take an hour,” he tossed me a look got a wink in return.

It was too easy.

The mist of the tangerine spurted out when I dug my nail into the peel and began to unravel it. Using my extensive orange-peeling skills, it came apart as one entire peel that I tossed into the garbage can that I walked past.

“Here,” I offered Sunny once I split the small fruit in half.

It’d be the only thing we’d put in our stomachs all day outside of the two coffees we knocked back-to-back at 7 AM. Considering it was pushing 11, we needed all the sustenance we could get and I was thankful I tossed it in my bag during my rush out this morning.

“Thanks,” she muttered, eyeing me for a second as she grabbed it.

When she raised a brow, I raised one back.

“What,” I asked with a mouthful of tangerine. I’d all but shovelled it down my throat as I followed Sunny’s eyes giving me a once over.

“How do you have time to dress cute every morning?”

“I want to put the Martins at table 30… all the way in the back.”

I glanced at her over the various sheets I was looking at in my hands to see she was casually sipping her iced water. “Which one are the Martins, again?”

Ali and Nate had far too many guests at their wedding and many of which Ali didn’t know too well, and neither did I. About 200 of the guests consisted of Nate’s family and friends and coworkers… and their plus-ones.

It didn’t help that damn near everybody wanted a seat at the head table when there were only 20 available seats, and since Nate and Ali were doing a sweetheart’s table for just the two of them, the 20 seats had to seat the entire Bridal party. And the immediate family – including our grandparents, both of their parents and siblings – me on Ali’s side and two of Nate’s brothers – took up 9 of those 20 seats.

“Nate’s ‘play cousins’ when he spent summers in the ‘hood’,” she grimaced as she tossed around a few air quotes. Her words were touched with a bit of a sneer. “They’re just… different.”

“You mean ghetto?”

I took the short porch steps two at a time before lightly beating my knuckles against the door. I used the glass of the front door as a mirror and used my finger as a brush to smooth my eyebrow hairs into place.

I could hear shuffling behind the door and lifted my hand once more to knock even louder… just to be annoying.

“I’m coming!”

The sound of my mom’s sweet voice, hardened with irritation as she quickly unlocked the door made me grin.

When she pulled the door open with a face that matched her voice, my mom’s face changed in an instant, and I got a delighted smile in return.

There were so many objects around that could aid in a potential suicide.

For instance, the pillow behind me on the couch. In theory, I could just put it over my face and never let go. It was impossible to suffocate yourself that way but with the obstacle I was currently facing, I’d defy natural physiological responses. I’d keep the pillow to my face until I couldn’t anymore.

Theoretically, of course.

“So how did you meet Miles,” his mom, who I’d learned was named Teresa, asked with a smile and a voice that feigned an interest I knew she didn’t have.

Nor did she care about how I knew Miles.

She thought I was some slut her son was screwing and honestly? She wasn’t 100% wrong about that.

Maybe just 75%.

I woke up to a groan… an annoyed one. And the sound of my name being mumbled, accompanied by the gentle shaking of my side.

“Alexis maaaan.”

The voice was clearer now and I realized it belonged to Miles but I couldn’t be bothered enough to open my eyes or move a muscle. The word ‘muscle’ almost alerted me to the fact that I did own a bunch and they were all sore.

As fuck.

I felt another shove to my side, not as gentle as the last one and I let out a long moan.

“Mmmmmmmwhaaaaaat,” I yelled, my voice raising as I drew the word out. “Stop hitting me,” I muttered as I finally managed the strength to turn my head and peel an eye open to see Miles wasn’t even awake. He was face down practically hanging off the side of the bed. And he was just reaching back and hitting me absently.

I glanced up from my phone momentarily to see we were pulling into the parking garage of Miles’ apartment building.

We’d run a couple errands before arriving here. Picking up necessities and what have you but the ride was otherwise pretty quiet. And for the later half, I was more or less consumed with my phone more than whatever streets he was turning down.

The windows were down so cool air flushed the car as we drove and provided a nice soundtrack beneath whatever Daniel Caesar song was playing.

His album was on repeat and played just over a bit of a hum.

…any place that I can’t feel you, I just wanna be near you…

I hummed the harmony of the song quietly just as my phone buzzed in my lap. My head dropped downwards again to read the message from Kyra. It caught me by surprise when it buzzed a second time, this time from Ali.
